Gouty is a painful type of arthritis that affects many people. Swollen, red, hot, and stiff joints are the result. It is caused by an excess of uric acid in the body. Uric acid is produced through the degradation of purine-like compounds. Purines are found in the tissues of your body and in foods including liver, dry beans and peas, and anchovies. Uric acid normally dissolves in the blood. It is excreted in urine after passing through the kidneys. Uric acid, on the other hand, can pile up and form needle-like crystals. It is quite painful when they develop in your joints. Kidney stones can also be caused by the crystals.
Gouty arthritis frequently affects the big toe first. Ankles, heels, knees, wrists, fingers, and elbows can all be affected. Gout episodes generally improve after a few days. Attacks get longer and more frequent with time.
You are more likely to get gouty arthrits if you:- Have family member with gout
- Eat too many foods rich in purines
Gouty is a difficult condition to diagnose. To check for crystals, your doctor may take a sample of fluid from an inflammatory joint. Gouty can be treated with medications. Gouty has become more common in both elderly and younger persons. The rise in younger individuals is unknown, but the rise in older people is linked to increasing life expectancy, increased weight (obesity is linked to gout), and greater use of diuretics, at least in part. Diuretics, for example, are frequently used to treat hypertension and can raise uric acid levels in the blood, increasing the risk of gout.
Stages of Gouty arthrits:
1.High uric acid: This stage has no symptoms and is usually not treated. Elevated uric acid without gout or kidney stones.
2.Acute flares: Acute gout episodes, which cause pain and inflammation in one or more joints, characterise this stage.
3.Intercritical periods: These are times in between acute episodes when a person feels normal yet is at danger of having another acute attack.
4.Advanced gouty: This is a stage of chronic gouty arthritis in which there are uric acid "lumps," or tophi, numerous acute gout episodes, and typically some discomfort even between attacks.
