Applicant tracking system (ATS) is a human resources software that acts as a database for job applicants. applicant tracking system enables staffing needs to be handled electronically by collecting and storing resumes, allowing companies to collate and analyze job applicant data. It can be also used to post job openings and/or to screen resumes and generate interview requests through e-mail. Initially, information contained within the database is used to screen applicants; Later, scheduling interviews, applicant testing, checking the references, completing the paperwork, and managing the recruitment process also come under this process.

Cloud-based ATS is gradually finding increased adoption, due to the decreased latency and lower cost of ATS. Thus, there is an increasing demand for ATS in small and medium sized business, worldwide.
For example, in 2018, Google (US) announced that users of Hire, its applicant tracking system (ATS) built for small and midsize employers using Google's suite of cloud-based productivity and collaboration apps, will be able to work faster with the addition of artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. The main goal of applicant tracking system is to make life easier for recruiters and hiring managers. The ATS allows companies to save time, money, and tedious work while hiring. ATS also ensures the best recruitment experience at both ends of the process.
