Electronic Shelf Label |
An electronic shelf label (ESL) system is used by retailers for displaying product pricing on shelves. These labels are increasingly being adopted in hypermarkets worldwide to simplify store operations. The use of electronic shelf labels allow hypermarkets to update the prices and other product-related information in less time. Moreover, high-speed pricing updates, increased readability, promotional messaging, and contrast of different ESL products help improve the product sales and store margins. ESLs have advantages such as long life cycles, high durability, can be updated with minimum manual effort, and replaceable batteries.
The product information is automatically updated when a new price is entered at the control of a centralized database. In most cases, electronic display units are permanently attached to open shelf shelving. They can also be controlled manually to allow customers to glance at the shelf and make a purchase decision. This enables the retail outlet to maintain sales at a steady rate, despite the economic conditions. An
electronic shelf label system is a great for companies that have outgrown their in-store inventory and need an inexpensive way to increase shelf space. It allows the company to maintain a consistent inventory level.
Many companies have found this an extremely economical way to run an in-store business. Thus, ESLs are gaining new efficiencies that can cut down labor costs, streamline e-commerce, manage stock, and communicate with shoppers in new ways. For example, in January 2018, Japan Display Inc. developed a 30cm-wide high resolution electronic paper (ePaper) electronic shelf labels for the ePaper business. It is a reflective display with visual qualities equivalent to traditional paper, combined with the advantages of electronic updating. ESLs help to eliminate the discrepancies in selling price of the products and displays reliable pricing to the customers.
As technology evolved, electronic shelf labels, or digital labels, also became a true media, right at the shelf, able to display content and information for retailers; all of these can be individually presented and very easily adapted. Thus, ESLs are now becoming the portal of Cloud-based applications focused on store automation, shopper engagement, and data analytics.
